EP Baseball: The Start of a New Season

After a devastating regional championship loss against Tinley Park last year, the Mustang Varsity Baseball team is getting ready for the first game of the season on March 19th.

The major difference from last year is the seniors that graduated from last season. There were 3 all-conference 3 year varsity seniors last year who are all off playing college including some key pitchers, solid outfielders, and a third baseman. The Mustangs only have 3 returning players to the lineup: William Miller, Sammy Rogers, and Karlton Carpenter. There are many open spots on varsity that the underclassmen need to step up and fill.

The returning varsity members are optimistic about their expectations this season. A lot is riding on the returning varsity members having big years.  For Miller, it will be his third year on varsity, and Rogers is going into his second year. The team will have to do without beloved Coach Glackin from last season, but Coach Dunneback is making a return and Coach Yarborough is coaching for his first year.

When asked about the expectations this season, Coach Smyth said, “We have to learn the value of hard work and getting better everyday. We need to learn to trust each other and take care of each other. Baseball is a fundamental game so if we do the little things right, the big things will take care of themselves. We’ll have our growing pains, but that’s expected out of a young club. But it’s how we grow and challenge adversity. I’m confident that we can compete for a regional championship at the end of the year.”
